In Art Du Nord’s spring show, Scott is contributing a variety of his stools, including Finny, shown above and below with Icelandic lamb pelts.

Dizzy and Dunce tables, shown below in ash and walnut, are also in the spring show.

While Joe’s work is often playful (yes, he really does have a print pattern of hot dogs in his portfolio), he also shows work with more subtle qualities. His senior project series, completed in May 2011 as part of his graphic design degree from MCAD, displays a sense of dramatic elegance combined with a bit of drama in the narrow focus and sharply contrasting rich blacks with soft, creamy whites.

In the full series of thirty intaglio prints, Lindsay explores attachment and letting go. She tries to let each piece decide its own form without directing the medium as much as she would in a traditional print.

These works are beautiful in and of themselves, but when viewed as a series they display the process behind each piece. In intaglio printmaking, the artist etches or engraves a metal plate which has been covered in an acid-resistant material such as resin or wax. Once the design is applied, the plate is dipped in acid which “bites” the design into the plate, and the plate then is inked and put through a press with paper.

Cheese and Untitled (below) are a peek at how Lindsay is exploring ways to shift and push the boundaries of this process – you’ll have to come to the show to see more.

Lindsay is also contributing smaller works like the intaglio and water color print below (Untitled, Purple). One of a three-piece series, this work was part of a color exploration.

George has created work at a uniquely low price point for this show, giving him the opportunity to refine his processes to create less labor-intensive pieces.  He often works directly with clients to produce site-specific, one of a kind furniture pieces, so we’re especially excited to have this more accessible work for the home in this show.

With a BFA in graphic design and and MFA in furniture from the University of Minnesota and MCAD, George has been building and designing furniture for nearly 20 years. He is an adjunct professor in furniture at MCAD, and is writing a new curriculum for the furniture design degree, including expanding design, methodology, and sustainability and mass production issues.

Melodie also works on a smaller scale creating delightful multimedia collages. I love the sense of space she creates in a very small object, using a very small amount of material. Her unexpected use of fabric, needle and thread on paper in these collages continues the theme of using a medium outside its ordinary purpose. View more of Melodie’s work on her website.

He creates star navigations and other flatwork using a CNC machine, drawing beautiful and intricate patterns in a circular shape, all with a single unbroken line. Andrew utilizes computer software to orchestrate a series of commands, and then gives up control as the machine works its way through the code.

Andrew started working in this technique as a student at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) in 2009. Many of his works map patterns of stars and constellations, like Polaris Supernova, below, which we’ll have in the show in both original and print form.

No two pieces are alike. Even when the code is the same, a piece can turn out different from the last. It’s a comment on time, he says, but perhaps also a comment on our relationship with technology, and the behavioral inconstancy it so often displays.

Andrew has recently returned to Minnesota after living and working in Brooklyn, NY. You can view more of his work on his website, and press on past installation projects.

In this show, we’re excited to have a few really unique smaller-scale pieces of Ed’s: this series of Noticeable Self-Portrait in neon are an exciting diversion from many of Ed’s larger abstract canvases.

Ed works in series, often iterating on one color, motif or image time and again. He’s not afraid to challenge or push a medium: some of his current work involves layering acrylic paint between sheets of plastic, turning the canvas and allowing the paint to run and drip as it (slowly) dries. His Self-Portrait series uses a variety of graphite, stencil and lettering over canvas or sheets of acrylic. Ed did his first Self-Portrait in 2009, and has recently renewed his interest in the subject.

In Project M, Kate spent two weeks living in a shipping container and working with other creative thinkers from around the world to create prototypes of ideas to help the greater good (read more about Project M here). Kate was inspired to create portraits of her comrades in a series titled Serious Play. Self-Portrait (above) and Nicole (below) will be in our spring show.

Kate has done some locally-inspired work as well: she created this gloriously-haired Dylan for METRO magazine in March. Read about her process in an interview.
